2. 1939, truly the most memorable year in filmmaking.

How many of today's TCM line-up can you identify by still photo?

4. I'll give it a go CBH!
Here are my guesses, and you stumped me on 2 of the photos--

Guess on photo number 1: 'Stagecoach'. it's a guess b/c John Wayne looks like he's dressed for a western, and 'Stagecoach' is the only western in today's line-up.

Photo number 2: 'Goodbye, Mr. Chips'. This is a film that is one of my favs, so I do recognize this one!

Stumped on Photo number 3 & 4--

Great idea for a post!! :hi:

5. Number 3 is "Ninotchka."
Number 4 is Dark Victory.

The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind would have been too obvious, and as it was Goodbye, Mr. Chips and Stagecoach weren't particularly subtle either!

7. Lavender, if you've never watched Ninotchka, give yourself a treat.
For me, it's Garbo's best role - she's perfectly cast as the dour Russian
who gradually opens up and begins to fly.

It has suave Melvyn Douglas, also perfectly cast as the layabout who
typifies everything that a good communist hates. Some wonderfully
witty repartee from him, perfectly delivered as always.

It also has wonderful supporting players like Felix Bressart, whom I
always enjoy, and of course the sublime direction of Ernst Lubitsch. He
had such an eye and ear for sly comedy, never overdone, but keeping you
smiling all the way through.

And of course the triumvirate of MGM in the golden years: Recording
Direction by Douglas Shearer; Art Direction by Cedric Gibbons; Costumes
by Adrian. With those three, you always know you're in for a visual and
aural treat.

But it's above all Garbo's film, and if anybody ever wondered what made
Garbo great, this film will tell you.

3. Today's Theme -- THE BEST OF THE BEST
Thanks to CBH sharing a link to how to find the themes this month, I discovered that today's theme is 'The Best Of The Best', and indeed it IS with today's line-up. Movie after movie are favorites of ours, all in one day!
