Happy holiday, everyone...!
Edited on Wed Nov-26-08 09:14 PM by bliss_eternal
I don't know how many are still reading or posting--w/holiday preparations and stuff.
Just wanted to wish everyone well.

If you cooked, do share what you're cooking (or post after the holiday, w/what you cooked).
I'm kind of procrastinating, by posting right now. :P I should be preparing.

I'm doing a green bean casserole, but I really feel like some greens....hmmmmm. Maybe I could make both?
Can never have too many veggies, right? I'll call my dh (who's out shopping for our fixins'.)
Time to stop procrastinating...haha.

Have a great holiday and enojoy your weekend!

:grouphug: :toast::party::bounce:

1. Happy holiday!
I'm procrastinating too. Technically not because I've already made two desserts to bring but I was planning on a third since it would fit the try I want to use. So far I've made 7 layer bars and nameless-shortbread-mini-cup-thingies (I'm great at making stuff up but not at naming it ;-)) I made inspired by a recipe like this. I've also got to bake for a work party on Tuesday so I'm contemplating what I'd rather snack on now, I've got to QC everything I bake :D, and then.

4. Happy Holiday, everybody!
My turkey started leaking in the fridge, so I had to cook it last night instead of waiting until today AND I had to Clorox wipe out the bottom of my fridge.

I'm paranoid about getting salmonella, so I took the bottom shelf AND the crispers apart, including taking the glass out, and cleaned that fridge like it has never been cleaned before.

I'm sooo sleepy now.

Bonus to cooking early and the fact that we are hogs: We already ate half a breast. I'm even sleepier. I think there is some scientific reason turkey makes you sleepy, other than taking forever to cook and causing some of us who didn't time our thawing just right to have to stay up all night before the holiday cooking it early.

I enjoyed pushing butter under the skin and getting the turkey ready to cook, but I hate the cleanup. At least all the salmonella causing part of the holiday has been cleaned up and I'm done with that part. Everything else is just gravy, dressing, dumplings, yams, and cranberry sauce. I'll do that tonight when we wake up. My aunt stayed up all night too. So, we will be crashing very shortly.

Happy holidays everybody! :grouphug:

6. Hey you...!
...good to see you here!

Wow--sounds like you have a big turkey. Smart of you to take all the salmonella precautions, too. Can't be too safe.
Hope you have a great day!

5. Merry Thanksgiving
Working on broccoli casserole, pumpkin pie, and New Orleans bread pudding to take to a potluck dinner. My mom isn't in good health and can't do a Thanksgiving dinner anymore; add to that my dad isn't one of the more pleasant people to deal with and isn't in good health either, well...you can see where that isn't going. I will be joining them.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving! :toast:

8. Merry turkey day, Argyle...
...sorry to hear about your mom. Hoping she feels better, and that you and you dad enjoy a "peaceful" day together. ;)
Broccoli casserole sounds delicious, and I'm going to have to get that recipe after the holiday. New Orleans bread pudding?!
You're making me miss my mamaw. :P

Cheers!

9. thanks
Happy Thanksgiving bliss. Over the months I have so appreciated your work here, and Lurking_Argyle, too.

Here are some photos to set the fall mood. I posted these in the photo forum, but thought I would bring them here to say "thanks" to you for all you have given to the rest of us.

I do a lot of work for fruit growers, but usually once the season is over I don't do anymore shooting. This year I have been out shooting the dregs, remnants, and aftermath recently.

Heirloom grapes. There are about 15 varieties of heirloom grapes growing near here, and the flavors are amazing -

Pear orchard -

Heirloom plum still on the tree -

Pear leaves on the ground -

Apple orchard with a few apples still on the tree -

One lone pear still hanging on -

Some shots in the apple orchard -

Cherries, some sort of Asian variety -

Holly -

Pear leaves -

Last of the pumpkins -

Herbs, still green -

Mint -

15. Simply Wow!
Don't get much of the fall colors here in SoCal. But this Thanksgiving day it's dark, gloomy and so rainy, just the way I like it because it reminds of me of the coziness of the East Coast this time of the year. I'm so glad to see your beautiful pictures, they've just deepened the feeling and wonder of the season for me.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours :)

Stay dry (if we get rain) and enjoy the day. Heading back to the kitchen. lol.

18. Yeah, been raining here in San Diego for almost 2 straight days.
And I mean heavily and it's heavenly. Lucky you! You're at home and cooking. My family and I are driving further south to my parents home.

...it rained here (so-cal, south of long beach I think, my directions are off)a bit last night, much heavier night before last. Totally jealous that you are still getting rain. It was forecasted for today, but blue skies today darn it. I love cooking on rainy days. Awww well. :hi:

17. thanks
Usually once harvest is over, that is it and there is nothing more to shoot that my clients are interested in. I had just found out that I had lost my Mom the day before, and this shoot has become something of a memorial to her. She would appreciate these. They have also become something of a metaphor, I think, with all of the changes that are happening now - Obama's election, the collapse of the economy.

Galas and Golden Delicious in that orchard - Galas that have hung in the tree this long have a really intense flavor. But there are some other older varieties - hard to tell when they have hung this long. Winesap maybe? Tolman Sweet? Way back in the orchard I found this one small block with a few trees of old and unusual varieties.

See that green apple that is sort of "quilted" on the top? (next to the last apple photo above.) I collected about a half bushel of those and made cobbler the other night. I don't know what they are - not a commercial variety or a modern variety, that is for sure. Very dense, very hard. Not all that tart though, which surprised me. Also, looking at them up closer indoors, they have really unusual coloring - there is a gold metallic iridescent undertone here and there, and interesting russeting around the calyx, so I want to get some more photos of them. I am thinking they might be Bramleys Seedlings - an old English variety, or Bietigheimer, an ancient German variety.

I am going to talk to the grower. There is no doubt a story there, and he will appreciate someone finding them and noticing.

I can't get over those heirloom grapes. Wish I could share them with everyone. The table grapes in the supermarket are so bland and uninteresting by comparison. All of these old ones were small, inconsistent in color and size and fragile - those are the usual reasons why fruit varieties are rejected for commercial purposes. But the flavors we are missing! Each different variety had a distinctive and strong, stunning really, flavor. When I find one of these older fruit varieties, the flavors are so complex and satisfying, that I think we are missing 99% of the flavor range in nature, Probably most of the nutrition, as well. All for appearance and durability - profitability for the brokers and dealers, in other words. Does this model of storing forever, banging it around and then shipping it all over hell's half acre and have it look "perfect" really serve anyone? The growers don't care - they grow the new junk to survive and stay on the farm, and many growers have an old block hidden away somewhere that they don't want to pull out. The people prefer the older fruit, and are blown away when I give them some. They need a little coaching and encouragement, but are always ecstatic once they taste it. I have taken older fruit into markets, and the produce managers are always enthusiastic and supportive. So why can't we have the good fruit? Why should our diets be dictated by the hustlers and brokers?
