"Stephen Hagan settles claim against Toowoomba's ES "Nigger" Brown Stand"

Snip:

ABORIGINAL activist Stephen Hagan's 10-year battle before over an allegedly racist stadium name has been resolved with a confidential settlement. Mr Hagan launched the action against Toowoomba Sports Ground Incorporated in 1999 over the name of a stand in the city's main football stadium - the ES "Nigger" Brown Stand.

The grandstand was demolished in September and Toowoomba Sports Ground agreed not to use the offensive word in any future tribute to Mr Brown, the city's first rugby league international.

Article here.

To summarize, there was a section of a football stadium here in Australia named after a big-time Australian rugby player. The man's nickname was "Nigger." Yes, that's right... "Nigger."

Here's a photo of Mr. Brown - http://www.news.com.au/common/imagedata/0,,5493441,00.jpg

So the folks at this football stadium decided to honor this man by creating a grandstand named the "Nigger" Brown Stand. A local Aboriginal (indigenous) activist said basically, "aww, HELL naw!" and has been fighting them naming this the "Nigger" stand for TEN YEARS. The stand was demolished last year and the folks at the football stadium have finally decided that they will not rename the new stand the "Nigger" stand and they will not refer to any subsequent tributes to Mr. Brown as "Nigger" anything. Phew! What a relief!

I can hear your collective jaws hitting your keyboards as you read this. Mine did the same...

1. OMG!
I have no words. They speak English in Australia the word means the same thing there as here does it not? This really needed to be litigated for ten years?

:banghead:

3. That wasn't me.
And fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, I did not see the message before it was deleted so I have no clue who made it.
