Officials at Fort Bragg, N.C., said they are ready for the media and security challenges that will arise when three closely watched capital cases go to trial almost simultaneously there this summer.

“Each case presents different challenges,” said Tom McCollum, spokesman for Fort Bragg. “These are three separate cases and they’re fairly unique the security concerning each of the cases is also unique.”

The cases, involving Master Sgt. Timothy B. Hennis, William J. Kreutzer and Staff Sgt. Alberto Martinez, are the only three capital cases pending across the Army. But Fort Bragg has experience with high-profile cases.

It was at Fort Bragg that Sgt. Hasan Akbar was convicted and sentenced to death for the March 23, 2003, grenade attack that killed Capt. Christopher Seifert and Air Force Maj. Gregory Stone and wounded 14 others from the 101st Airborne Division. The attack happened in Kuwait, hours before the unit crossed into Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Akbar is now one of six men on the military’s death row at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

McCollum declined to talk about how the post is going to handle security when these trials take place, but he said his office has a plan for dealing with the flood of media.
