Over 100 voluntary separation pay slots leftBy Bruce Rolfsen - Staff writer

If you’re a midcareer officer thinking of leaving the Air Force, there are still plenty of offers for voluntary separation pay on the table.
As of Jan. 11, only 82 officers had been approved for voluntary separation bonus since the fiscal 2008 program began in September. The Air Force is counting on 200 officers leaving after taking lump-sum payments equal to three times their annual base pay. Since the departing officers do not qualify for retirement benefits, getting airmen to take money is proving a hard sell.

The VSP program is open to officers with more 12 years of service but no more than 15 years in uniform. The officers also must be in a career field that is overmanned in their year group and not otherwise restricted. The restricted career fields include pilots, navigators, intelligence and medical positions.
To see if your career field qualifies for VSP, you can go the Air Force Personnel Center’s Web site and follow the links for “force shaping” and “voluntary separation pay.”
The VSP program is part of the service’s overall effort to reduce its active-duty force to 316,000 airmen by the end 2009.
