F-16 deployment draws warning from N. Korea

SEOUL, South Korea — The United States’ recent military buildup in South Korea is an unpardonable challenge that will only aggravate tensions on the peninsula and disrupt nuclear negotiations, North Korea warned Sunday.

“We will strongly cope with any provocation and pressure that threaten peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula,” the North’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland said in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

The North has made frequent accusations against the U.S., but the latest angry reaction came in response to last week’s arrival of a squadron of about 20 U.S. F-16 fighter jets in South Korea.

The U.S. military has said the four-month deployment is aimed at evaluating the readiness of American forces in the region.

The North’s committee accused the U.S. of fomenting reckless military confrontation that it says aggravates tensions and disrupts finding a peaceful resolution on Pyongyang’s nuclear programs.
