Girl, 13, says chief molested her on airplane

PHOENIX — Authorities have arrested a Navy chief petty officer for allegedly molesting a 13-year-old girl on a flight from Honolulu to Phoenix.

The teen was sitting next to Chief Storekeeper (SS) Shawn Michael Cole, 40, on the Friday night Hawaiian Airlines flight. Police said Wednesday that Cole struck up a conversation with the girl and the two watched a movie together on his laptop.

The girl, whose lap was covered with a blanket, was resting her eyes when Cole began molesting her, according to a complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Phoenix.

The girl “pretended to be asleep during the incident because she was afraid,” Detective Todd Hopper wrote.

Austin Draper, a flight attendant, saw Cole caressing the girl and asked him if they were traveling together.
