CLOVIS, N.M. — The number of personnel and aircraft to be stationed at Cannon Air Force Base might not be as high as military officials had predicted, according to a Government Accountability Office report.

As many as 5,700 people were to be moved to the eastern New Mexico base by 2010 as part of the Air Force Special Operations Command. But because of funding constraints, assignments of 1,400 personnel are under review by the Department of Defense, said the report that was released Friday.

The Clovis News Journal reported Wednesday that the number of aircraft also is expected to be lower — nearly 70 aircraft will arrive at the base by 2010, instead of 100.

New Mexico’s senators, as well as local officials, said they weren’t surprised by the report.

“While the GAO might estimate that there will be fewer aircraft at Cannon, the truth is AFSOC numbers have changed before and could change again,” said Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M. “We don’t know for sure what the final Cannon numbers will be but know there will be great things for Cannon.”
