Fire damages elementary school in Ansbach

An early morning fire Thursday damaged the gymnasium/cafeteria wing of Rainbow Elementary School in Ansbach, Germany. No one was injured.

The attic above the gymnasium/cafeteria caught fire at about 5:40 a.m., according to a statement released by the U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach public affairs office.

The school’s fire alarm alerted the Barton Barracks fire department, which, with the aid of four German fire departments, was able to contain the blaze to the gymnasium/cafeteria wing and extinguish it by 10 a.m., the statement said.

No one was in the school at the time of the fire, and school was canceled for the day for the school’s 260 students.

Friday was a scheduled no-school day.
