Panel seeks overhaul of trans-Atlantic alliances
Panel seeks overhaul of trans-Atlantic alliances
By Charlie Coon, Stars and Stripes
Mideast edition, Saturday, February 2, 2008

A group of former senior officers has proposed that the U.S., NATO and the European Union rebuild their military and political alliances into one more relevant to the 21st century.

Beyond addressing the war in Afghanistan, which “runs the risk of failure,” and developing a new, post-Cold War security strategy, the authors of a recently released report are pushing for an alliance of democracies “from Finland to Alaska.”

The recommendations come from the 152-page report “Toward a Grand Strategy for an Uncertain World: Renewing the Transatlantic Partnership.”

“None of our nations is any longer capable of dealing with the complex and challenging world in which we live on its own,” the report states.

The report’s authors include retired U.S. Gen. John Shalikashvili, a former NATO commander and Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman; retired German Gen. Klaus Naumann, former chairman of NATO’s military committee, and former defense chiefs from the United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands.
