NAPLES, Italy — The Italian military will descend on the U.S. Navy support site base in Gricignano on Thursday to help get rid of the mounds of uncollected garbage accumulating since December.

The Navy base has not been immune to the trash crisis plaguing the Naples area, and receptacles have gone untouched for weeks.

“It’s gotten to the point that there are mounds of trash, and if you throw your trash bag on the pile, you risk it falling back down,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Donta Freeman, who lives on the support site with his wife and 1-year-old son.

He has seen an influx in the population of mice there, he said, and the stray-cat population that already had troubled the base has been rummaging through the trash piles, spilling and scattering the garbage.

“And the cats are getting fat,” Freeman said.
