WEST POINT, N.Y. — A West Point cadet faces federal charges after military officials say he tried to download child pornography and then tried to destroy the evidence while on the military academy’s grounds.

Cadet Michael J. Martin was charged Thursday with attempting to possess child pornography, failure to obey a general order, conduct unbecoming an officer and obstruction of justice under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Military officials say the charges are the first step in a court-martial proceeding. The next step is a pretrial investigation — similar to a civilian grand jury — which will be done by a military officer at West Point.

That officer will turn over evidence and a recommendation to a senior officer, who will in turn dispose of the case or recommend a trial by court-martial.
