YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — A USS Kitty Hawk sailor was sentenced to two months confinement Friday for pointing a gun at his supervisor during an argument last year while the aircraft carrier was at sea.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Sammy Bondar was on temporary assignment to ship’s security and was the department’s “go-to guy” before that day, witnesses said.

Bondar gave a tearful statement Friday in his court-martial at Yokosuka Naval Base, saying that he wished “it never would have happened.”

Bondar pleaded guilty to dereliction of duty for taking his loaded, Navy-issued, 9 mm pistol out of its holster during an argument with Petty Officer 2nd Class Kendrick Henson, said Bondar’s defense attorney, Lt. Garrett Snow.

Although Bondar stopped soon after — and didn’t flip the safety or pull the trigger — the action was still outside the allowed use of force, said Snow, who called the incident a “scuffle.”
