Deal clears way to finish KMCC

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — The Air Force and German federal government hope construction of Ramstein Air Base’s problem-riddled mall-hotel will be completed sometime this year.

But Air Force officials still can’t answer the biggest question: When will the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center be open for business?

U.S. Air Forces in Europe and German government officials have reached a deal with the last primary contractor to finish the job on the 844,000-square-foot facility, according to an Air Force statement provided to Stars and Stripes. Most of the contractors walked off the job last year because funding was withheld due to a backlog of unapproved change orders.

“We are confident that these negotiations and the invigorated work force will provide for project completion sometime in 2008,” the statement says.

That doesn’t necessarily mean people will be doing this year’s Christmas shopping at what will be Europe’s biggest military exchange. Store shelves have to be stocked and other preparatory work is needed.
