Navy lifts tuition ban for departing sailors

A change to education benefit rules lets sailors getting ready to leave the fleet take college classes paid for by the Navy. Here, sailors aboard the dock landing ship Harpers Ferry take a class through the Navy College Program for Afloat College Education.

Sailors getting ready to leave the Navy with a year left on their enlistment now will be eligible for a parting gift: college classes.

The ban on sailors with fewer than 20 years of service taking Navy-paid college courses during the last year of an enlistment has been rescinded, according to a naval administrative message released Tuesday.

That ban, part of last summer’s education benefit policy changes, applied to the Tuition Assistance program and the Navy College Program for Afloat College Education courses while at sea.

The rest of the program remains unchanged.

The Navy’s new Voluntary Education Instruction, due out soon, will incorporate the education benefit policies. Officials say the revision is the first since the instruction hit the streets in 1988.
