Dover tech sergeant faces child porn charges

DOVER, Del. — An Air Force sergeant stationed at Dover Air Force Base has been arrested on child pornography charges, federal officials said.

Tech. Sgt. Jonathan Amato, a leadership instructor at Dover, was arrested Monday and charged with receiving and possessing child pornography. A federal judge in Wilmington ordered that Amato be detained pending a preliminary hearing Thursday.

According to an affidavit by Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agent David Yeary, Amato allegedly used a credit card to access child porn Web sites four times from September 2006 to February 2007.

A search of Amato’s off-base residence last week resulted in the seizure of four computers, according to authorities. On a computer storage device that was also seized, investigators found about 60 child porn photographs, including about 20 depicting prepubescent children engaged in sex acts with adults.

According to the affidavit, Amato admitted that he had accessed child porn Web sites and downloaded images to the storage device.
