OCEANSIDE, Calif. — The Marine Corps is investigating the death of a private who was found slumped over a desk Monday at his work station at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, Calif., officials said Wednesday.

Camp Pendleton officials identified the Marine as Pvt. Jeffery W. Slaten, an electrical equipment repair specialist from Lee, Ala., who was assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 7.

Slaten, 24, was found “unresponsive and unconscious” and was taken to the combat center’s naval hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 1:27 p.m. Monday, officials said in a statement.

“The Marines and sailors of 1st Marine Logistics Group mourn the loss of Pvt. Slaten. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family,” according to the statement.

Slaten enlisted in the Corps in July 2005 and had deployed to Iraq. His awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
