CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — The alleged rape of an Okinawa girl prompted Marine Lt. Gen. Richard Zilmer on Wednesday to order more training on “ethics and leadership” for all Marines on Okinawa and mainland Japan.
The action, which the military is calling a stand-down, will require every servicemember in a Marine unit to attend training “that clearly defines the standards of conduct expected of them,” Marine Corps officials said in a written statement to Stars and Stripes.
The training will be conducted by senior leaders at each base. It is to take place Thursday and Friday, but Marine officials would not specify how long the training sessions would be.
A Marine spokesman said no new orders or additional curfew restrictions have been issued in the wake of the incident.
“The alleged rape of a 14-year-old Okinawan girl at the hands of a Marine is both shocking and saddening to me,” Zilmer, the commanding general of III Marine Expeditionary Force, said in the statement.
