Education benefit transfers may wait until fall
Education benefit transfers may wait until fall

WASHINGTON — Even with a new push to let troops transfer their education benefits to family members, defense officials don’t expect to have any programs ready for college classes this fall.

Pentagon planners are expected to unveil proposals in the next few weeks which would allow servicemembers who can’t use their college tuition credits to give them to spouses or dependent children.

The idea, already part of several bills under consideration before Congress, was one of several military-family-friendly proposals touted alongside the fiscal 2009 defense budget and mentioned by President Bush in the last State of the Union address.

Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Withington said officials hope to have the program in place and passed by Congress by the start of fiscal 2009 on Oct. 1.

“However, we don’t know the final form that the legislation will take,” he said.

I wonder if this is tied into the $735,700,000,000 2009 'defence' budget.
