Guard commander departure was not punitive

An abrupt change of command at the Air National Guard’s 104th Fighter Wing was the result of a long-planned reassignment and not a punitive measure, a unit spokesman said.

Col. Marcel E. Kerdavid Jr. was reassigned from being commander of the 104th at Barnes Air National Guard Base, Mass., to a staff position at the Massachusetts National Guard Joint Force Headquarters, according to a Guard press release. The previously unannounced move had been in plans “for a number of weeks with the air commander as well as the assistant adjutant general,” said Capt. Matthew Mutti, spokesman for the 104th.

“The reason it came out in an abrupt fashion is the timeline for this,” Mutti said. “The air commander needed or wanted Col. Kerdavid in place for the beginning of (the week starting Feb. 17), and that did not allow a lot of time pertaining to the movement.”

Brig. Gen. Leon Rice, a former pilot with the 104th, will serve as interim commander until a permanent replacement for Kerdavid is named.

In his staff role, Kerdavid will help transition the 104th from an A-10 to an F-15 unit. The 102nd Fighter Wing, also stationed at Barnes, is transitioning from an F-15 mission into the 102nd Intelligence Wing.
