FORT POLK, La. — A Fort Polk soldier, who died of injuries received during a training accident at the base, was identified Friday.

Pvt. Michael Ernest Fremer, 18, of Barnegat, N.J., died Wednesday after suffering blunt force trauma to the abdominal area when he was pinned between a Light Medium Tactical Vehicle and a wrecker, said Samantha Evans, a spokeswoman for the base. Further details were withheld pending a full investigation.

Fremer was treated at the scene, but was later transported to Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 1:30 p.m., Evans said.

Fremer was a vehicle mechanic with the 88th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade. He joined the Army in April 2007 and has served at Fort Polk since October.
