1st Sustainment Command: ‘If they need it, we move it

A worker sprays the tracks of an M-88 wrecker in the Navy Customs Battalion Tango "wash rack" at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. Military vehicles get thoroughly cleaned to make sure potentially harmful organic substances in theater are not brought into the United States.

CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait — The largest logistics effort since World War II is being managed from this major rear line supply base that sprouted six years ago in the open desert south of Kuwait City.

The 1st Sustainment Command (Theater), U.S. Army Central’s right-hand organization, moves massive amounts of food, fuel, ammunition and people into Iraq and Afghanistan each day. In all, it supports 27 countries and 128 forward operating bases.

“If they need it, we move it,” said Col. Judy Lemire, the 1st TSC’s support operations officer. “We’re responsible for making sure it gets there.”

On a typical day, the unit ships more than 2 million gallons of fuel and 10,000 tons of supplies throughout the Middle East. It also arranges for about 750,000 meals, enough to feed the city of Baltimore three times.

Officials target an area that stretches from the central Asian states to the Horn of Africa, encompassing approximately 6.5 million square miles.

uhc comment: If this is the largest logistics effort since World War II, I wonder how Vietnam rated on the same scale.
