Quiet in Taji attributed to many reasons

TAJI, Iraq — When Warrant Officer 1 Favian McGraw came to Taji in 2005, mortar and rocket fire were a fact of life.

Shells fell on base at least every other day and often landed twice a day.

But the now 31-year-old soldier found the situation had changed radically when he returned to Taji two months ago with the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade, which contains units based out of Katterbach, Illesheim, Wiesbaden and Nuremberg, Germany.

Taji has been hit only once since Dec. 9 — and that one was a dud.

“Since we’ve been here, it’s been so quiet,” he said. “The real enemy is complacency.”
