Europe gas prices jump

Army and Air Force Exchange Service fuel prices will jump significantly Saturday in Germany, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands on news of a U.S. price spike. A weekly price survey by the U.S. Department of Energy showed an increase across all grades of fuel — anywhere from 7.6 cents a gallon for premium unleaded to 11.6 cents for diesel. AAFES prices are based primarily on results from the Energy Department survey.

As a result of the surge in U.S. prices, regular unleaded — sold only in Germany — will jump 8.2 cents to $3.179 a gallon. Midgrade gas climbs 7.9 cents to $3.29 in Germany and $3.228 in the U.K., while premium rises 7.6 cents to $3.403 in Germany and $3.341 in the U.K.

In Germany, diesel rises 4 cents a gallon to $3.612, and continues to be sold at cost, according to an AAFES release. Diesel sold in the U.K. rises 11.6 cents to 3.471.

The harshest increase hits the Netherlands, where midgrade gas soars 25.6 cents per gallon to $3.82, premium jumps 25.4 cents to $4.11 and diesel leaps 24.7 cents to $3.951 per gallon. Prices there are also at cost, according to AAFES. Signs posted recently at many AAFES locations alert customers that prices on all grades of gas have been reduced by three cents a gallon to compensate for a pricing error last year that resulted in overcharges.

Without the three-cent reduction, midgrade gas would cost $3.32 in Germany and $3.258 in the U.K.
