Nuclear sub North Carolina delivered to Navy

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A $2.3 billion nuclear submarine named for North Carolina is now in the hands of the Navy.

Northrop Grumman says the new sub recently returned to its Newport News shipyard from its third and final round of sea trials. The North Carolina is the fourth sub of the Virginia-class nuclear attack vessel, which is replacing the Los Angeles-class boats.

The trials tested all the ship’s systems, including submerging and high-speed runs on the surface and submerged.

The North Carolina is a joint project between of the Northrop Grumman and General Dynamics Electric Boat of Groton, Conn. Construction started in 2002.
