2nd ID bids farewell to third soldier since December

Capt. Jason Buursma pays his last respects to Pfc. Mark Anthony Sheehy at a memorial service in Sheehy's honor Thursday at Camp Casey's Dragon Valley. Sheehy, of the 2nd Infantry Division's 1st Battalion, 72nd Armor, Company E, was described as a straight talker and a dependable medic by fellow soldiers.

CAMP CASEY, South Korea — Soldiers gathered at the Dragon Valley Gym on Thursday to say goodbye to another soldier.

The memorial for Pfc. Mark Sheehy, 26, is the third held for a member of the 2nd Infantry Division’s 1st Battalion, 72nd Armor Regiment since December.

Battalion commander Lt. Col. Thomas Isom told his soldiers that outside of combat, he had never seen so many casualties strike the same unit.

“It is times like this that test us,” Isom said. “It is times like this that show us who we are and what we are made of.”

Sheehy died by suicide, soldiers said. He was on leave in San Francisco with his family on Feb. 11 when his body was found.
