GRAFENWÖHR, Germany — Abrams tanks are back at Grafenwöhr with the arrival of the 2nd “Dagger” Brigade, which plans to start training with the newly refurbished equipment in April.

So far, about 150 2nd Brigade soldiers have moved to Grafenwöhr, with 3,500 more expected over the next two summers as the unit relocates from Schweinfurt. The new troops are busy moving into new barracks and houses, in-processing other soldiers and preparing headquarters facilities and motor pools for the unit’s arrival.

Meanwhile, the tanks wait at nearby Camp Aachen.

The tanks recently arrived from the U.S., where they were sent for work after the brigade returned from its mission to Iraq in November, said Maj. Eric Stetson, 2nd Brigade effects coordinator.

There hasn’t been a lot of heavy military equipment rumbling through Grafenwöhr Training Area since the Vilseck-based 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment left for Iraq last summer. But the tanks should be firing their big guns in about six weeks, according Pfc. John Fiore, 23, of the 1st Battalion, 77th Armor Regiment.
