Twentynine Palms Marine killed in Iraq
Staff report

A lance corporal was killed while conducting combat operations in Iraq on Thursday, defense officials announced Monday, marking the Corps’ first combat-related death in more than a month.

Lance Cpl. Drew W. Weaver, 20, of St. Charles, Mo., died in Anbar province. He was assigned to 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion at Twentynine Palms, Calif., a Defense Department statement said.

More information was not immediately available from the Corps, but the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on its Web site that a funeral will be held Friday for Weaver in his hometown.

Former classmates and teachers at St. Charles West High School recalled him as an easygoing man who decided to join the Corps shortly before graduating high school.

“He tried to find the best in whatever situation he was in,” assistant principal Scott Voelkl, one of Weaver’s former teachers, told the Post-Dispatch. “He didn’t let things get to him.”
