Marine found dead in barracks identified

Officials identified a Marine found dead Wednesday morning in his barracks room at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., as Lance Cpl. Derek R. Refsland, 21.

The native of Troy, Mont., was assigned to Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 165 at the air station, according to a station press release.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating the death, officials said Wednesday.

Refsland was declared dead around 2 a.m. by emergency personnel after another Marine found him in the room, according to officials.

Maj. Jason Johnston, a station spokesman, said Wednesday that it has not been determined whether foul play was involved.
