NORFOLK, Va. — A sailor on the Norfolk-based carrier Theodore Roosevelt has died after sustaining a severe head injury when the ship hit heavy seas off the Florida coast.

The sailor’s name was not released pending notification of the family.

According to a press release, the ship was conducting routine operations off the coast of Jacksonville, Fla., when the weather took a rapid turn for the worse. No details about the accident have been released.

The sailor was taken by helicopter to a Jacksonville hospital, and died there Saturday.

The Navy is investigating the incident.
