Afghans Want Fewer NATO TroopsApril 01, 2008

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN - While leaders of NATO member states gather April 2 in Romania to discuss the deployment of more troops to Afghanistan, Afghan officials and legislators asked for their own indigenous forces to be strengthened and increased.
Mohammad Hashim Watanwal, a member of the lower house of the National Assembly, said he believes an increased number of foreign troops would complicate the security situation.
"Many people in rural areas, especially in the southern region, regard the foreign forces as invaders," said Watanwal, who represents Uruzgan province, which along with other southern provinces like Helmand, Kandahar and Zabul have been the main strongholds of Taliban militants.
Watanwal said the presence of international troops provokes local people to join the Taliban.
"When we had fewer foreign forces in the southern region, we had less fighting, but when more forces came, the fighting also increased," he said.
