ORLANDO, Fla. — A former soldier and Iraq war contractor accused of trying to take bomb components on an airplane had a history of mental illness and was distraught over his mother’s 2005 murder, according to a lawyer for the family.

Kevin Christopher Brown, 32, had been in and out of hospitals before his arrest Tuesday at Orlando International Airport, said H. Charles Johnson, who is representing the family in the murder case.

Brown was charged with one count of attempting to carry an explosive or incendiary device on an aircraft, and had a bond hearing set for Thursday afternoon. The Jamaican is a former Army soldier and Iraq contractor.

“He was a bit unstable,” Johnson said. “I think the mother’s death would have been on his mind.”

The attorney said Brown’s mother, Sandra McLeod, was strangled June 5, 2005, while meeting someone who leased property from her. Three men are charged in the case.
