Marine couple missing from Calif. bases

SAN DIEGO — Two newlywed Marines were missing from Southern California bases, the Marines said Thursday.

The Marines and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service were cooperating with Escondido police in a search for Lance Cpl. Margaret McMahon-Reid and George Reid II, the Marines said. Both were placed on “unauthorized absence” status Tuesday after failing to report to duty.

The Marines have asked both families for help finding the couple.

Both joined the Marines 10 months ago and work as communication equipment operators. McMahon-Reid, 20, is assigned to Camp Pendleton. Reid, 22, is at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

Neither has been deployed in combat with the Marines.
