Navy seeks federal help on Bethesda projects

BETHESDA, Md. — The Navy has decided to seek federal funding for some of the road and transit projects that will be needed for the planned expansion of the Navy hospital in Bethesda.

The decision reverses an earlier conclusion that the projects were not eligible for federal money. The reversal is included in an environmental impact statement expected to be released Friday.

Plans call for $71 million in transportation projects. The medical center is expanding because of the planned closing of Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

State and local officials objected after the Navy initially concluded the road and transit projects weren’t eligible for federal funds. Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett said the latest opinion is a significant improvement.
