Darton Nurse Deploys to Iraq at 53
April 05, 2008
Knight Ridder/Tribune

Major Bonnie Gary, a nurse with the Air Force Reserve, will be heading to Iraq in the next month. She feels she will miss her family and friends here and students from Darton College while serving the United States and treating its military personnel.

"Deploying to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom is a small price to pay compared to the sacrifices so many other military men and women give while spending nearly 12 to 15 months away from family and friends," says the 53-year-old who has plans to leave the first of May.

Gary obtained her masters in nursing in 2002 from the University of Phoenix. She earned her associates and bachelors degrees from Georgia Southwestern University.

She has worked as a nursing instructor from Darton College on the Cordele campus since the March 1 tornado in Americus and currently teaches 27 students who hope to pursue medical careers.

"I'm going to miss my students' graduation and that is really hard," she admits about the 18 students who made the move with her to the Cordele campus following the Americus tornado. They have since moved on to senior level courses at the Albany campus.
