Army offers Texas recruits chance to win Wii

MISSION, Texas — At first glance, it looks like the classic Army recruiting billboard — a stern, helmeted soldier and the words “Stand Strong. Stand Tall. Stand Out.”

But to the side, in even bigger text, is the new wrinkle: “Win A Wii.”

The Wii is Nintendo’s in-demand video game system and the Army’s newest advertising hook in the Rio Grande Valley.

Seven billboards went up in the Texas-Mexico border region last month urging those interested in serving their country — and in winning the hard-to-find game system — to send a text message on their cell phones. A reply message directs them to an Army Web site where they can register to win the Wii — there’s only one — and can visit a recruiter.

“It’s really not ‘Join the Army, get a Wii,”’ said Bart Keyes, chief of advertising and public affairs at the Army’s San Antonio Recruiting Battalion, which oversees recruitment in South Texas.
