Soldiers facing assault charges

BAUMHOLDER, Germany — Three Baumholder-based soldiers face charges in connection with allegations that they assaulted a group of German soccer fans late Friday after a game between Kaiserslautern and Misenbach.

The fight broke out in a McDonald’s parking lot at 11:15 p.m. The soldiers apparently felt insulted by the post-game chants of the soccer fans, according to the local newspaper Die Rheinpfalz.

A 15-year-old boy suffered an eye injury during the skirmish and was transported to the hospital in Homburg, the paper reported.

One of the soldiers also stands accused of vandalizing a parked vehicle during the ruckus.

Kaiserslautern police referred questions about the incident to the local military police, which in turn referred questions to the public affairs office.
