Army to Reinvestigate Soldier's DeathApril 10, 2008

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Army investigators will interview more people and look at possible discrepancies in the accounts of the death of an Eastern Iowa Soldier in Iraq, a relative said April 8.
The Department of Defense initially reported that Sgt. James Musack, 23, of Riverside, died from injuries suffered in a non-combat incident on Nov. 21, 2006, north of Baghdad. An Army investigation completed in December 2007 determined Musack died from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.
Family members dispute that, saying Musack would not have killed himself. As reported by GazetteOnline on April 7, the Army has reopened the investigation.
Chris Grey, chief of public affairs for the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command, said in an email April 8 the case is being reopened "because it is the right thing to do to ensure we have exhausted every possible lead and have properly addressed all concerns raised in our review ... and by the family."
Musack's aunt, DeeAnna Rios-Newlin of Tulsa, Okla., said she spoke with an Army investigator for more than five hours April 8. She was told the Army would interview more Soldiers who were at the base when Musack died and re-examine the timeline of events leading up to his death. Musack's mother, Yvette Eastom of Glenpool, Okla., was to meet with an Army investigator April 9. She doesn't believe her son could have shot himself with his M4 carbine, which can be more than 30 inches long.
