More than 100 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division’s headquarters unit will land home at Fort Bragg, N.C., on Friday after their 15-month deployment to Afghanistan.
According to an Army press release, among those re-deploying will be division commander Maj. Gen. David Rodriguez and Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas Capel, who headed Combined Joint Task Force 82 and NATO’s International Security Assistance Force Regional Command East during the rotation.
The 82nd Airborne Division’s headquarters in February 2007 replaced the 10th Mountain Division’s headquarters at Bagram Air Base outside the capital city of Kabul.
There were more than 17,000 soldiers assigned under CJTF-82 and ISAF, the release said, from the 82nd Airborne Division, the 173rd Airborne Brigade and other support elements.
“Those 17,000 soldiers did an outstanding job throughout the 15 months enabling security for Afghanistan,” Rodriguez said in the release. “They found and defeated insurgents and terrorists in the toughest conditions, patrolling in dangerous village streets and in rugged mountain passes; operating out of combat outposts and forward operating bases spread out over a country the size of Texas.”
