All services meet March recruiting goals

Recruiting was strong across all military branches and reserve components in March, according to numbers released by the Defense Department.

All four active-duty branches met or exceeded their recruiting goals, with the Marine Corps making the biggest splash by bringing in 2,234 recruits against a goal of 1,632, thus making 137 percent of the goal.

All reserve components met their goals as well. The Army Reserve and Air National Guard each hit 121 percent of their respective goals.

The Air Guard’s boost in recruits may have been connected to the redesign of their Web site, GoANG.com, which relaunched March 17 with improved visuals and functionality. Technical problems forced Air Guard officials to pull the site down near the end of the month, but they were able to re-relaunch it April 4.

Traffic to the site is up slightly over the old site, according to Master Sgt. Bob Hall, noncommissioned officer in charge of advertising for the Air Guard. The site is also doing better on search engines, he said.

The Department of Defense has announced its recruiting and retention statistics by the active and reserve components for the month of September. This closes out the Fiscal Year 2005 recruiting year. The Fiscal Year 2006 recruiting year began on 1 October (2005).

Active duty recruiting. All of the active duty services met or exceeded their recruiting goals for the month of September. The Navy’s recruiting goal was 4,818, and it enlisted 4,886 (101 percent). The Marine Corps’ goal was 3,694, and it recruited 3,738 (101 percent). The Air Force goal was 2,682, and it recruited 2,771 (103 percent). The Army's goal was 8,365, and it recruited 8,710 (104 percent).

Active duty retention. The Army, Air Force and Marine Corps exceeded their annual retention goals. The Navy achieved 91 percent of its mid-career goal.

Reserve forces recruiting. Three of the six reserve components, Army Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Air Force Reserve, exceeded their September recruiting goals. The latter two also exceeded their goals for the fiscal year.

Reserve forces retention. For September, Army National Guard retention was 104 percent of the cumulative goal of 32,571, and Air National Guard retention was 110 percent of its cumulative goal of 10,413. Losses in all reserve components in August were within acceptable limits. Indications are that trend continued into September.

1/11/2007 - WASHINGTON (AFNEWS) -- Last month's recruiting figures for all military services exceeded goals, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said in testimony Jan. 11 before the House Armed Services Committee.

In December, the Army recruited 861 Soldiers, exceeding its goal by 23 percent, according to information released by the Defense Department. The Marine Corps recruited 1,761, exceeding its goal by 10 percent, and the Navy and Air Force met their recruitment goals of 2,071 and 2,330, respectively.

Marine Corps misses February recruitment goals

ARLINGTON, Va. — Like the Army Reserve, the Marine Corps missed a key recruiting goal for the second consecutive month in February — a concrete indication of the effect the war on terror is having on the all-volunteer force.

Marine recruiters were asked to deliver 2,964 new contracts in February, but were able to produce only 2,772, or 93.5 percent of the goal, according to Maj. David Griesmer, a spokesman for the Corps’ Recruiting Command at Quantico, Va.

January’s contracting target was 3,270 recruits, but only 3,186 new Marines signed up, or 97 percent of the requirement.

years. December is historically the lowest recruiting month, everyone seems to understand that the training is outdoors and January is cold.
June through August seem to be the highest, when school is out, and everyone knows they can finish initial training and get leave for Thanksgiving and Christmas. (If you are in basic or AIT through December, you go on leave for Christmas anyway, but most civilians don't seem to know this.)
Total recruiting goals for the fiscal year are based on the total size of the force authorized by Congress. When there is a large increase in that number, then that fiscal year will have a higher recruiting goal to cover it, if the increase is smaller the following fiscal year, the recruiting goal will be smaller the following fiscal year.
