Up for promotion despite 2-grade disciplineBy Bruce Rolfsen - Staff writer

Some airmen could advance two grades despite disciplinary actions that resulted in a demotion.
The Air Force Personnel Center is blaming the problem on the service’s human resources computer system.
Personnel units are being warned that airmen who have lost a stripe as punishment may still get promoted as if they had never done anything wrong.
The problem affects junior enlisted airmen moving up to airman, airman first class and senior airman. Promotions to these ranks are almost automatic — airmen must meet only time-in-service and time-in-grade minimums and have the approval of their commander. They don’t have to test for promotion or have their performance evaluations compared against other airmen.
If a demoted airman finds himself unexpectedly promoted, he is obligated to report the mistake to his supervisors, said Col. Bill Foote, director of personnel services at the Air Force Personnel Center, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas.
