KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii — Dozens of Big Island residents turned out Monday to say they don’t like giant C-17 Globemaster cargo planes swooping down on their island.
At a Hawaii County Council committee meeting, Air Force representatives said an environmental assessment has yet to be completed and no final decisions have been made on rules for low-altitude training flights over the island’s lava landscape.
At least 60 people signed up to testify before the council’s Committee on Public Works & Intergovernmental Affairs, following a presentation on plans for C-17 training by Col. John J. Torres, commander of the 15th Airlift Wing at Hickam Air Force Base.
Each Globemaster can carry more than 85 tons of cargo and cruise at more than 520 mph. They serve as support aircraft for the Hawaii-based Stryker brigade, which trains on both Oahu and the Big Island.
Among the concerns raised were the negative impact on residents’ quality of life, agriculture, livestock, endangered species, property values, and cultural sites. Increased noise, air, water and soil pollution also were noted as major concerns.Rest of article at:
