Lawmaker: Review needed in Lauterbach case

WASHINGTON — Female troops often feel intimidated into keeping complaints of sexual abuse quiet and the military’s reporting system needs an overhaul, a congressman planned to say Thursday.

Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, planned to call for a full review of the handling of a complaint by Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, a constituent whose body was found badly burned along with her fetus after she filed a rape claim against a fellow Marine at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Turner said the Marines’ handling of the situation deserves an independent review.

“We’re going to continue to highlight the failure in judgment and failure in policy here,” Turner said Wednesday night.

On April 10, Police arrested Marine Cpl. Cesar Laurean, 21, of Las Vegas, in Lauterbach’s death. He is charged with murder.
