Coroner: Enlarged heart killed pvt. in training

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Franklin County coroner says an enlarged heart and other factors led to the death of an Ohio Army National Guard private who collapsed during an obstacle course.

Dr. Brad Lewis says 23-year-old Joshua O’Bannon died early Monday from conditions that deprived him of oxygen, including an enlarged heart, sickle-cell trait and dehydration. The Columbus native collapsed during a two-mile exercise Sunday in Delaware.

O’Bannon played football at Robert Morris University near Pittsburgh. He was scheduled to graduate next month and go to basic training in June.

Guard spokesman James Sims says the two-day training is supposed to get recruits ready for basic training. O’Bannon’s is the first death to come from the program.
