An airman died yesterday in Afghanistan of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device, the Defense Department has announced.

Senior Airman Jonathan A.V. Yelner, 24, of Lafayette, Calif., died near Bagram Air Base. He was assigned to the 28th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D., but was serving with the 755th Air Expeditionary Wing at Bagram.

“My most sincere condolences go out to the family of our lost service member,” Col. Scott Vander Hamm, 28th Bomb Wing commander, said in a base press release. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected and impacted by Airman Yelner’s death.”

A memorial service has not yet been planned, Ellsworth officials said.
