Driving crackdown spurs piles of paperwork
Driving crackdown spurs piles of paperwork

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — Lt. Gen. Keith Stalder admits that commanders who fall under his leadership are less than thrilled about the paperwork they’ll have to deal with following a new safety order he recently signed.

Everyone within the II Marine Expeditionary Force has until May 22 to fill out forms acknowledging everything from how many vehicles they own — including motorcycles, off-road motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles — to the number of traffic violations they’ve had.

In all, the separate documents cover 14 pages. A painstaking administrative process, perhaps, but one Stalder said he believes will reduce the number of Marines killed and seriously injured in private motor vehicle wrecks.

“That was probably the only area that I didn’t compromise on, as much as my commanders would have liked,” Stalder said in his office May 1. “There was a real concern, and in some cases, strong objections to, the administrative requirements, ... but the truth is that the administrative requirements are the core of the order.”

The new order, a work in progress for about six months, was initiated because of the number of motorcycle fatalities and injuries occurring within II MEF. From October 2007 to January 2008, more II MEF Marines died in motorcycle wrecks than in combat.
