NORFOLK, Va. — About 130 sailors who patrolled the rivers and inland waterways of Iraq are sailing back to Norfolk.

Riverine Squadron 2 is due back in Virginia waters Thursday after a nearly eight-month deployment.

In Iraq, the squadron worked to keep insurgents from using waterways as a means of transportation for weapons, people and materials.

The squadron discovered 43 weapons caches buried by insurgents and completed more than 600 combat missions and more than 200 shoreline sweeps, the Navy said.

The squadron was relieved earlier this month.

1. Back to the Furute
The Brown Water Navy, shelved after Vietnam because we didn't see the need for any more for the "littoral" or riverine warfare requirements, is back with a vengence.
