Marine officials said late Wednesday that a Marine found dead Tuesday in a barracks room at the Marine base in Twentynine Palms, Calif., was a native of Austin, Texas, who had deployed twice to Iraq.

Cpl. Chad E. Oligschlaeger, 21, was found unresponsive in his room at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center. He was pronounced dead by the base fire department, 1st Marine Division officials said in a statement Wednesday night.

The cause of death is unknown and the incident remains under investigation, officials said.

Oligschlaeger was a mortmarman with 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines, officials said. He joined the Corps on July 19, 2004, and had received the Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

“Each Marine and sailor in our Division is a value member and is deeply important to us,” the official said. “Our thought and condolences remain with Oligschlaeger’s family and friends.”
