TACOMA, Wash. — A former Ranger from Fort Lewis has pleaded guilty to robbing a Tacoma bank in a plea deal that calls for him to serve 24 years in prison.

Luke Sommer, of Peachland, British Columbia, entered the plea in U.S. District Court on Tuesday to charges including conspiracy, bank robbery and possession of a hand grenade.

Court documents say the 21-year-old recruited two other Rangers and two Canadians to participate in the takeover-style robbery at a Bank of America branch in August 2006. They made off with more than $50,000, and were caught when authorities traced the license plate of the getaway car and found evidence at Fort Lewis.

Sommer fled to British Columbia following the robbery. He reached the plea deal with federal prosecutors this month, and agreed not to fight his return to the U.S.

The other defendants have all pleaded guilty.
