Pacific briefs: U.S. civilians in Korea see allowances rise

Pacific edition, Thursday, May 28, 2008

SEOUL — U.S. government civilians in South Korea will see more money in their paycheck next month, thanks to an increase in their post allowances.

The allowance will rise from 10 to 15 percent of an employee’s expendable income, effective May 25th, according to the State Department’s Office of Allowances. Civilians will see the increase in their June 18th paychecks.

The post allowance is meant to supplement the cost of living overseas, and is calculated by comparing the price of goods and services in a foreign location to the price of those same items in Washington, D.C.

The post allowance may be adjusted as often as every two weeks.
